Our founder Finn spoke at COP29 on the role of the ocean as a climate change solution https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n-bVnKPMhyc.
Here are his reflections on COP29.
"COP is the most important meeting ever held on earth. Climate change is the greatest challenge humans have ever faced and this is the meeting where we have a chance to fix it.
While this COP lacked in ambition and results, it was empowering to be a part amongst so many diverse people from around the world that really cared about Climate Action.
Notably the financial commitments from developed countries to support developing countries fell well short of what was required. However there was progress made on Article 6, or the carbon markets section.
Many of the rules were put in place for how carbon credits can be traded amongst countries to meet their Paris agreement commitments. While it is unclear exactly how each country will approach this, I am hopeful there will be an opportunity for nature based restoration around the world to be accelerated through article 6.
These carbon credit transactions must be pragmatic in their implementation so they can be accessed by smaller scale conservation groups and farmers around the world. No doubt once government start buying large quantities of carbon credits it will stir controversy, but it is critical to scale climate action globally.
The access we have as Kiwis to the negotiations is fantastic, and seems very classic New Zealand to be able to facilitate that level of access for delegates. From observing these negotiations, it seems that despite the global political backdrop being very challenging at the moment, the negotiators are doing a pretty good job at compromise and being constructive.
Overall the outtake is bleak, not enough was done, but at least it’s better than nothing. This is all the more reason for the private sector to step up on climate action."
